ACWA SolaAfrica Bokpoort CSP Power Plant Programme is implemented in communities of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The project’s objective is to improve livelihoods and economic opportunities of communities, in particular women.

The project has implemented a series of activities benefiting women, including water supply systems, solar lightning, soup kitchens and feeding groups, training and counselling on primary healthcare, substance abuse, gender-based violence and reproductive health, and an incubator for women-owned SMEs.

93% increase in time savings

The introduction of piped water in Zuma village 

The project intervention of providing piped water to homes has contributed to time savings through a significant reduction in water collection time and produced time savings fromwomen’s work in several areas. Time has been considerably for women in the performance of other chores such as cooking, cleaning the home, caring for children, washing clothes etc.

Campaigns to reduce gender-based violence and reduce teen pregnancies, using young women as peer-to-peer educators and the incubator that provides business skills and network development training contributed significantly to women’s empowerment.
