The Story
The Community Led Food Forest Project (CFFP), sponsored by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and led by GROOTS Kenya, is restoring degraded landscapes in the Marmanet and Igwamiti areas of Laikipia County, Kenya, through a community-led, women-centred approach to food forests, agroforestry and landscape restoration.
The project supports women to lead community restoration activities while creating economic opportunities through tree nursery enterprises, paid restoration work and agroforestry training. Through these activities, women can strengthen their technical skills, livelihoods and participation in land-use decision-making.
By connecting landscape restoration with women's economic empowerment and leadership, the project aims to contribute to healthier ecosystems, stronger livelihoods and more inclusive, resilient communities.
Through the W+ Income & Assets and Leadership Domains, the project recognises the importance of women's economic opportunities and leadership in achieving lasting environmental and community outcomes.

The Community Led Food Forest Project (CFFP) implements a women-centered agroforestry and land restoration model through community-led food forests, tree nursery enterprises, paid restoration employment, and technical capacity development.

What We Did
Supported the establishment and strengthening of women-led community restoration groups, creating platforms for collective action, peer learning, and local decision-making.
Strengthened women’s leadership in land restoration and food forest governance through participatory planning, community-led monitoring, and management of restoration activities.
Delivered targeted capacity development on agroforestry, restoration practices, gender and feminist approaches, land rights, and digital monitoring systems.
Fostered women’s economic empowerment and confidence through nursery enterprises, paid restoration work, and leadership roles, enabling them to influence land-use decisions and navigate social and institutional barriers within their communities.
