Building Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Resource Management
The Story
In Misool, Raja Ampat, coastal communities depend on marine and forest resources for their livelihoods. The community also maintains Sasi, a traditional system for managing natural resources sustainably.
Women already play important roles in managing and using these resources, but their influence in formal decision-making remains limited. This project builds on their existing knowledge by strengthening women’s technical skills, leadership and participation in Sasi governance.
Through leadership development, resource-management training and stronger Sasi institutions, the project aims to support women to have a greater voice in decisions that shape the long-term stewardship of their natural resources.

What We Did
Women Leading the Way in Misool
In Misool, one of the major islands of Raja Ampat, coastal communities depend closely on marine and forest resources for their livelihoods. The island is also home to strong customary institutions, including Sasi, a traditional system for managing and protecting natural resources.
The project builds on this foundation by strengthening women’s knowledge, leadership and participation in Sasi. Through technical training, leadership development and stronger Sasi institutions, women will be supported to play a greater role in sustainable resource management and community decision-making
