The Story
In Honduras, the Improved Firewood Cookstoves Programme is creating cleaner, more efficient kitchens by promoting and supporting the use of Justa cookstoves. Through a combination of local production, microfinance, and community engagement, the programme reduces time spent collecting firewood, lowers household emissions, and empowers women by increasing their participation in sustainable energy adoption.

What We Did
- Strengthened local capacity: Supported implementing partners (AHDESA, FUDEIMFA, AHPROCAFE, ENASA) in stove production, distribution, and installation.
- Promoted microfinance and co-financing: Worked with households to provide co-financing for materials and installation, covering approximately 50% of stove costs through FOCAEP support.
- Installed clean cookstoves: Delivered Justa stoves to households, integrating them into kitchens with proper installation by trained masons.
- Prepared for verification and scaling: Programme progressing toward Gold Standard registration, enabling carbon credit generation, and W+ Standard measurement of women’s benefits.
Results & Impact
- Expected outcomes include reduced time spent on firewood collection and cooking, lower household emissions, and improved health and safety for women and families.
- W+ Standard application enables measurement of women’s empowerment and economic benefits.
- FOCAEP’s co-financing model fosters local ownership and sustainable adoption of clean cookstoves.
